Frequently Asked Questions
✦ What is a death doula?
A death doula (also called an end-of-life doula or death midwife) is a non-medical companion who provides emotional, spiritual, practical, and sometimes physical support to people nearing the end of life—and to those who love them. We hold space, offer presence, help create rituals, facilitate reflection, and honor the dying process as a sacred threshold.
✦ Do you only work with people who are dying?
No. While end-of-life care is a central part of my work, I also support:
Caregivers and loved ones of people who are dying
People living with illness, disability, or aging who want gentle, empowering care
Those seeking guidance around grief, transitions, or spiritual reflection
Families facing the death of a pet and wanting to honor that passage with care and ritual
✦ What is the difference between a doula and hospice?
Hospice is a medical model of care. It provides services like pain management, symptom control, equipment, and a clinical care team (usually including a nurse, social worker, chaplain, and aide). Hospice is typically covered by Medicare or insurance and is available to people with a prognosis of six months or less.
A death doula is a non-medical support person. We walk alongside the dying person and their loved ones, tending to the emotional, spiritual, relational, and practical needs that arise. Doulas often fill the gaps that hospice—due to time constraints or system limitations—can’t always cover.
Where hospice might check in for an hour or two a week, a doula can offer extended presence, ritual creation, life review, legacy projects, family support, and sitting vigil. Our roles are different, but not in conflict. In fact, when doula care and hospice work together, the circle of support becomes stronger, more soulful, and more complete.
✦ What is the difference between a hired caregiver and a doula?
A caregiver provides hands-on, often task-based support with daily living: things like bathing, dressing, mobility, meals, companionship, and transportation. Their focus is physical safety, comfort, and helping someone navigate daily life—whether they’re recovering, aging, or living with illness.
A death doula offers emotional, spiritual, and practical support focused on meaning, presence, and the threshold of death (or major life transitions). This might include legacy work, ritual creation, vigil planning, guided reflection, family facilitation, or simply sitting in silence with someone nearing the end. In my practice, these roles often overlap. I bring doula presence and consciousness into caregiving, and I bring a caregiver’s grounded practicality into doula work. You don’t have to choose one or the other—we can integrate both, based on your needs.

✦ What is the Green Bottle sliding scale?
The Green Bottle model is a trust-based pricing system. Instead of one flat rate, I offer three pricing tiers:

Supporter Rate for those with stable income
Sustainer Rate for those with financial abundance who wish to support others
There are no applications or proof required. You choose the rate that aligns with your reality. Learn more about choosing your rate →
✦ Do you offer payment plans or trades?
Yes. If the Community Rate is still a stretch for you, please reach out. I’m open to payment plans & creative reciprocity—especially when there’s a meaningful fit. Let’s talk.
✦ Where do you offer services?
I’m based in [your city/region—add if you'd like], and offer both in-person and virtual support. Travel may be available for certain services such as bedside presence, caregiving, or home ceremonies.
✦ Are your services religious?
No. My work is spiritually rooted but non-denominational. I honor and welcome all belief systems, including none at all. My goal is to co-create meaning in a way that resonates with you—whether through poetry, prayer, ritual, nature, or silence.
✦ How do I get started?
It’s simple. Reach out via the Contact page to schedule a free 20-minute consultation. We’ll talk about what you’re facing, what kind of support might be most helpful, and how we might work together.
